Phillip B. McAfee

"Phil was my best friend in high school.  We met in Algebra II class during the junior year.  Phil had been a left-handed football quarterback and basketball player in junior high school but he had been unable to make a varsity team at Norwalk High.  He played "C" football (1961) and JV basketball (1962) but decided to drop high school sports after two years.  Phil started to bowl with me and quickly taught himself to be one of the best junior bowlers at Norwalk Bowl.  We bowled on junior house leagues, junior traveling leagues and many state tournaments from 1963 to 1965 representing Norwalk Bowl and Dutch Village Bowl.  After graduating from NHS, Phil and I went to Cerritos JC in September 1964 but Phil suddenly decided to quit college after one year and join the marines during the war in Vietnam.  The last time I saw Phil was in the summer of 1966 after he had completed marine boot camp.  He died in an auto accident near New Orleans in August 1966 before he could get an overseas assignment."  (Jerry Moore)

"We deeply regret reporting news of the tragic death of Phil McAfee.  Audrey McCain was especially upset because Phil was a former junior kegler and one of Audrey's favorites.  Dave Taylor, I. P-T scribe was also stunned, as is evident from the following excerpt from the Bowling Along column Tuesday night, 'Almost immediately on our return to home we were stunned at news of the death of young Long Beach area kegler Phil McAfee.  Phil, 20 was one of a four-member Long Beach Independent, Press-Telegram junior bowling team we took to the New York World's Fair last summer to compete in the All-American Youth Bowl National finals.  He was also a long-time member of the DutchVillage Junior All-Star league ... Phil, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard B. McAfee of 11245 E. Ratliffe St., Norwalk, was killed early Saturday in a traffic accident near New Orleans, LA, while on a weekend liberty from the Marine Air Detachment at Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, TN, where he was serving as a Marine PFC ... A graduate of Norwalk High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps last March ... While there is no way to fully express our regret to Phil's parents, we do want to thank them for the opportunity they made possible for us to come to know a fine person and an outstanding sportsman.' "  (Alice Meglemre, California Kegler)
