The Favourite (Yorgos Lanthimos) - 2018

Queen Anne ruled parts of Great Britain from 1702 to her death in 1714 at the age of 49.  She suffered through 17 pregnancies but saw only one child live past age two and he died at age 11.  Life in 18th century Europe was awful for everyone including royalty.  Queen Anne was incompetent in every way and totally unable to make decisions for such an important country in world history.  This movie is perfect and depressing at the same time as it seems to recreate scenes from known accounts of the time.  Actors Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman were perfectly cast in a period piece that is painful to watch.  I am sure that Queen Anne would have been absolutely mortified by this detailed examination of her dysfunctional existence.  There is no escape here - just two hours of angst. The technical production is flawless. [JAM 2/3/2019]
