Mad #513 (John Ficarra) - Dumbest People 2011 - February 2012

This annual issue about dumb celebrities and politicos was not as much fun as those of previous years.  Most of the complaints are obvious and mean-spirited.  I did enjoy "Sheen Lantern" drawn by Tom Richmond.  The Green Lantern by writers Kit Lively and Scott Nickel presents three issues of the dysfunctional comic book hero.  I continue to be amazed at the amount of time the media allots to arrogant jerks like Charlie Sheen.  Of the other 19 on the list, I agree that Jerry Sandusky, Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Donald Trump, Rupert Murdoch, Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain belong there.

Other than 90-year-old Al Jaffee ("Mad Fold-In") and the ever-present Sergio Aragones ("A Mad Look at Protests"), the best of the living Mad artists were missing from this issue.  Where are the great artists like Jack Davis, Mort Drucker and Angelo Torres?  After Richmond, I think the best art in the issue was "The Amazingly Dangerous Spider-Play" drawn by Ty Templeton.  [JAM 12/10/2011]
