Mad #406 (Nick Meglin and John Ficarra) - Marie Severin Issue - June 2001

Marie Severin served as the colorist for all of the EC comic books ("all in color for a dime") in the 1950s including the first 23 issues of Mad.  She never received credit in print for her work as did the featured artists that included her older brother John Severin (1921-2012).  As Mad made its transition back to color, colorists started to get credit for their work starting with this issue. Wildstorm added the color to the Angelo Torres drawings in "Cannibal" and Digital Chameleon did the same for "Eminem".  The work that was once done with competence in-house by one individual was now farmed to separate companies employing numerous colorists.  Digital Chameleon went out of business in 2003.  Wildstorm closed its doors in 2010.  The other significant event in Mad #406 is the return of the grey spy, drawn for the first time by Peter Kuper.  The previous appearance by the third spy was in Mad #99 drawn by Antonio Prohias.
