1924

Our father, Homer Lee Moore was born on April 26, 1923 in Paoli, Oklahoma.  His parents were Joe Edmond Moore (1889-1967) and Myrtle Armenda Hawkins Moore (1893-1930).  Homer was five years old when his mother died of Bright's Disease.  He remembered that his mother had promised to buy him a bicycle but he never did get one after she died.  Homer learned to read, write and do basic arithmetic in elementary school but quit after sixth (?) grade to help his father pick cotton on the family farm.  His first job was at the Wonderbread bakery in Oklahoma City.  After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Homer joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Maryland battleship until the end of the war in 1945.  The photo is Homer with his mother in Paoli.
